Grand Theft Auto is an open-world action game developed by DMA Design (now Rockstar North) and published by BMG Interactive on November 28, 1997. The game lets players assume the role of a criminal rising through the ranks of the underworld across three fictional cities inspired by New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.
