Duke Nukem is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Apogee Software on July 1, 1991. The game introduces Duke Nukem, a muscular, wisecracking hero on a mission to stop the evil Dr. Proton from taking over the world with his army of Techbots. Featuring fast-paced shooting, power-ups, and destructible environments, Duke Nukem combines classic 2D platforming with explosive action and humor. It laid the foundation for the later, more famous Duke Nukem 3D series and became one of the defining PC action games of the early ’90s.
