Based on the Japanese legend of the 47 Ronin, the film follows a group of masterless samurai who seek to avenge the death of their lord, Lord Asano. The story combines historical events with fantastical elements, including shapeshifting sorcerers and mythical creatures. Keanu Reeves plays Kai, a half-Japanese, half-British outcast who joins the ronin in their quest for honor and justice.
